Muncie Solar Eclipse

Summer of 2023, I interned at the City of Muncie, Indiana, and assisted with the marketing campaign for their 2024 Solar Eclipse. During my time there, I designed signage, merchandise, social media social media templates, and more.

Prior to my internship, the primary logo for the eclipse was designed by artist Samantha Chawtin. Building off of her initial work, I helped to define brand colors, fonts, and other elements that I used to expand the brand’s visual language.

Signage

The city wanted the phrase “Experience the Magic in Muncie” to be the main tagline. Using Chawtin’s original logo as a reference, I sketched out a new design for this phrase in the same style. After painstakingly vectorizing my sketch by hand (and reusing vectorized pieces from the original logo where I could,) I began exploring how I could incorporate my new design into the layout of the signage. 


Below, some of the final designs, intended for usage on banners and billboards. While keeping the original feel of the logo in mind, I aimed to expand on that original design to create a fantastical sky scene, invoking the magical quality of the eclipse.


Merchandise

The city requested new designs and mockups for merchandise they planned to incorporate into the campaign as well. From scratch, I created two 80’s-themed designs, based on Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart. (Playing off of Indiana commonly being referred to as the “heartland” of America.)



Social Media Templates

I designed a number of social media templates for Facebook and Instagram for use throughout the campaign. The sun was the central visual element in these designs, placed slightly differently in each one to provide some variety in their social media feed.
